General Dentistry: Nightguards

any of our patients suffer from bruxism, which is an involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw, often taking place at night while the patient is sleeping. Bruxism over time will gradually wear down your teeth, possibly through the enamel, resulting in exposed dentin. If this is left untreated many unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, jaw and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain, and gum recession may result.

The best way to treat bruxism is with a nightguard. A nightguard is basically a very thin mouthguard worn at night to help with the habit and prevent worn down teeth. When you come into our office and it is determined that a nightguard will be beneficial to you we will take an impression of your mouth and send it out to our lab where a custom nightguard will be fabricated. When the nightguard is made in about a week, we will fit it to your mouth and bite pattern, make any adjustments if necessary, and then send you home with a simple and effective cure for your bruxism.
