Procelain Veneers

Cosmetic Dentistry: Porcelain Veneers

orcelain veneers are wafer thin shells of porcelain bonded to the front surface of teeth so to create a cosmetic improvement for those teeth and often a bite improvement.

Uses of porcelain veneers:

  • Crooked or uneven teeth
  • Worn down teeth giving the appearance of old age
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Too much gum showing when you smile
  • Dark, yellow, or tetracycline stained teeth that cannot be whitened or bleached

Advantages of porcelain veneers:

Natural looking and esthetically pleasing - The enamel, or thin outer surface, of a natural tooth is translucent meaning that it allows light to penetrate until it reaches and reflects off of the opaque dentin layer underneath. This is what gives teeth their lustrous appearance. Due to the glass like nature and thin composition of porcelain veneers they are able to closely mimic this property of enamel, thus giving them the same lustrous appearance and making them indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Very stain resistant - Many types of dental bonding materials and even natural teeth can be very susceptible to staining and discoloring. Due to the veneer’s porcelain surface it is able to be very stain resistant to common consumption products such as tea, coffee, red wine, and tobacco products. Any stain that does manage to take place can easily be polished off during a routine cleaning.

Non invasive – The procedure ranges from removing less than a half millimeter of enamel to being totally non invasive, most of the time requiring no local anesthetic.

What the procedure involves:

Dr. Prisco will begin by buffing or lightly shaving down a small portion of the front surface of the tooth. This will make room for the porcelain veneer to sit. Next an impression will be taken of your bite, and our lab technician will custom craft each of your veneers. Once they are ready your temporary veneers will be removed, your new porcelain veneers will be cemented and the color will be customized to match your natural teeth, leaving you with a new natural looking smile.
